Barcelona Dark I

Now that the camera, film-stock and developer issues are resolved it is finally time to get around to starting the project that was originally meant to start in January – night photography in Barcelona.
Now that the camera, film-stock and developer issues are resolved it is finally time to get around to starting the project that was originally meant to start in January – night photography in Barcelona.
A new set of night shots on film from Barcelona – this time using pushed Tri-X (400TX) developed in ID-11.
A set of stormy beach scenes, shot along the coast from Badalona to el Masnou, north of Barcelona. These were part of a film shot as part of a processing test for Delta 400 exposed at EI1600 and processed in DD-X 1+4 as if shot at EI 3200. The resulting grain is quite harsh, but also quite fine compared to faster films. The film was scanned using an E-M1.2 with a macro lens, which tends to de-emphasise the grain compared to standalone (non-flatbed) film scanners.
One of the challenges with Olympus micro 4/3 cameras is the mind bogglingly large number of options and shooting modes. I use an E-M1 mark II with an Olympus 60mm macro lens to digitise 35mm negatives, but I have never really been sure what the optimum way to configure the camera was. This post is an attempt to put that right…
The second set of night-time street images taken in Barcelona and shot on high-ISO film. These are images of an illegal street market late at night (around 10pm) at the Rambla del Mar, at the harbour. The sellers are usually illegal immigrants, and most of the goods are fake clones of branded handbags, shoes, sunglasses and Barcelona FC shirts. All images taken with the Leica M7 and Zeiss ZM 1,5/50 with Ilford Delta 3200 metered at EI3200 and processed in ID-11 as if shot at EI6400.
That things are not what they seem should be an automatic reaction to anything that is reported today on the internet. Leica M7 with 50mm on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 at dilution 1+1. It is immediately obvious how much smoother the image is compared to the previous (push processed) example, and while I like the result I suspect that it would be fairly easy to replicate this with a digital camera.
The sixth and final in a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Leica M7 with 21mm SEM and a 091 dark red filter, shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 1+1.
The fifth in a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Leica M7 with 21mm SEM and a 091 dark red filter, shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 1+1.
Fourth in a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Leica M7 with 21mm SEM and a 091 dark red filter, shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 1+1.
The third of a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Leica M7 with 21mm SEM and a 091 dark red filter, shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 1+1.
Second of a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). Leica M7 with 21mm SEM and a 091 dark red filter, shot on Delta 100 and processed in ID-11 1+1.
The first of a set of semi-abstract images of the Museu d’ Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). The museum opened in 1995 and exhibits a wide range of modern artworks. The MACBA is also infamous for being rather more successful as a skateboarding destination – something which sits awkwardly with local residents and is somewhat at odds with the serene modernist architecture originally envisaged by the architect and which invites comparison with the Getty Centre in Los Angeles. But perhaps the architectural connection connection with skateboarding was there from the beginning… Leica M7 […]
Street art in the old town, Barcelona. Ilford Delta 100 shot with a dark red filter, and processed in ID-11. The scan resolution is not great, partly because I opted to scan (macro photograph) the negatives as complete frames, including the sprocket holes. While this seemed a cool thing to do at the time, I think the effect is a bit clichéd and I cropped this to match what I saw – you can see the raw scan and another from the same mural below. You can also see […]
First of a short set of images of street art, taken around Barcelona. Taken using a dark red filter on Ilford Delta 100 film, and processed in ID-11.
Animal rights protest, Plaça Sant Jaume, Barcelona. Leica M7 with HP5+ at EI 3200, processed in DD-X 1+4. The dark face is due to paint rather than anything from the film processing…
Setting up candles for a display in Plaça de la Universitat, Barcelona. This was a rather strange event which mixed elements of Catalan Independence (Assemblea Nacional de Catalunya) with campaigns for human rights and support for refugees. Barcelona is seemingly unique in Europe at the moment, in that it is one of the few parts of Europe where support for immigrants remains high, despite the clear problems of integration that are evident in places such as the Raval.
