An image of the construction work at the back of the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria in central Barcelona. The work to construct an underground car-park was completed some time ago and the surface is now nearing completion. It is quite impressive that such a huge amount of work has been undertaken while the main market remained open. Minolta XD-s with MC 24mm f2.8 and Kodak Ektar 100, processed in to black and white.
Mammoth statue, Parc de la Ciutadella, Barcelona. I am not entirely sure what the connection between mammoths and Barcelona is, but there is also a Museu del Mamut here for anyone tired of the sunshine. Lecia M7 with Zeiss ZM 2/35 Biogon and Ilford HP5+.
Church reflections in the Biblioteca Facultat Comunicació i Relacions Internacionals, Universitat Ramon Llull, Barcelona. Leica M7 with Zeiss ZM 2/35 Biogon and Ilford HP5+.
Tram lines alongside the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. I am sticking with simpler, static subjects until I get the hang of the 35mm framing and camera handling – so the straight railway tracks seem more than appropriate. Leica M7, Zeiss ZM 2/35 Biogon, Ilford HP5+.
The Hotel Arts and casino at Port Olimpic, Barcelona. A suite in this inviting looking tower can cost up to 12000 euros per night, so if you are planning to stay for some time a cheaper option might simply be to buy a flat in Barceloneta. This was taken with Ilford HP5+, which to my eye appears to have both substantially nicer grain than XP2 and also higher resolution. I think that the grain’s texture is an advantage here, adding a nice 1960’s inner-city council housing vibe to the image of the luxury […]
What better way to mark the 100th post here but with a photograph of people browsing the second-hand books and magazines at the Sant Antoni Sunday Book Market, Barcelona. The transition from traditional printed matter to online sources is radically transforming almost all media that we use today. In modern parlance, people no longer simply read books, they “consume content” – a change in terminology that embraces both the increasing number of different media forms and also the notion of disposable hyper-consumption. As media moves increasingly online it becomes a pick-and-choose buffet of short snacks that […]
Early morning shot looking towards fishing harbour taken from alongside the Maremagnum at Port Vell, Barcelona. This is one of the first pictures taken with a newly acquired Leica M7 and 35mm Zeiss Vogon Biogon lens. To ensure even less continuity, this was also the first time that I have used Kodak Ektar 100 colour negative film. Shooting with a rangefinder camera is very much a different experience to a film SLR. The rangefinder itself is very easy to use and much faster to focus accurately than the usual SLR split-screen.Using the viewfinder with […]
Bicing cyclists, Barcelona. Minolta XD-s with 50mm and Fuji C200 film. This was shot with the lens nearly wide open by pre-focussing on the ground before the cycles arrived.
Plaça Catalunya, Barcelona. Minolta XD-s with 50mm and Fuji C200 film.
Career de Petritxol, Barcelona. Minolta XD-s with 50mm f1.4 and Fuji C200. Shot using zone focusing.
Having both been away and the back again in Barcelona, we are now going away again – this time to Italy to escape the August heat. I will update the blog with new posts when I can while away, but I suspect that the internet connection is going to be a bit sporadic for the next few weeks….
This has been one of the wetter spring/summers in Barcelona – alternating the extreme mediterranean heat with sudden and often fierce thunderstorms. The resulting humidity makes it feel even hotter than it should do at this time of year. Carrer de Joaquin Costa, Barcelona. Canon 50mm @ f1.2 prefocussed on the ground at the point where the subject was walking to.
Street Art, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona.
Carrer del Dr Dou, Barcelona. This seemed appropriate as I am travelling today (or at least it seemed appropriate when this post was written, nearly a week ago…).
Carrer Nou de la Rambla, Barcelona. Just as Barcelona attracts tourists, it also attracts the homeless. In our immediate area there are homeless people from the UK, Ireland and scandinavia. The city is attractive for its mild climate and high level of tolerance. The communities of the homeless and the tourists appear to function on perpendicular dimensions and seldom interact, perhaps because disconcertingly few tourists venture away from the main streets, attractions and tour busses.
