The Old Dairy

Milk churn and racks of maturing cheeses, Pian delle Betulle, Italy

The walk from Pian delle Betulle, in Alta Valsassina, to the Larice Bruciato (burnt larch)  is a lovely trail through a beech forest and pasturelands. On the way there is the Alpe Ortighera, a summer pasture, where there is the old dairy illustrated in this post. This is the main room at the entrance of the dairy with the churning machine to make butter (the stainless steel drum on the right) and some of the season production of ricotta, a whey cheese. The forms on the shelves are left to […]

Fragments and Scenes

Church Fresco, Pasturo, Italy.

Random fragmentary memories from the North of Italy. I quite like using small contextless fragmentary images as opposed to something with more context and depth. The image becomes more about the texture and pattern than the content. Five Textures

Old weathered log

Again, something slightly different from usual with some abstract(ish) natural textures photographed while walking in the Alps. With one exception these were again shot using a polarising filter – which lived on the camera most of the time as a way to cut out haze and reflections on this rather damp trip.

Endangered Species

Endangered Species, Barcelona.

Catalan retirees, El Raval, Barcelona. Catalans are becoming an endangered species in the Raval, displaced by immigrants, tourists and the homeless. Postings are going to be a bit erratic over the next few weeks, due to a combination of work, upcoming travel (for work) and a switch to shooting more with film (which takes more than a week to process and eventually scan…).

Watching

Looking

Another example of how using a 50mm lens is difficult in Barcelona. This was taken at f6.3 ISO10000. I would have liked to have been further back and more depth of field, but there was very little space and very little light.
