No Son Funcionaris

No Son Funcionaris is a collected set of black and white street images, shot in central Barcelona and in particular around the Raval.

The title comes from graffiti seen on a wall, “No son funcionaris, son mercenaris” – which roughly translates as “They are not officials, they are mercenaries”. In Spain, to be a funcionario – an official of the state – is often aspired to in the highest of terms. A permanent job, well paid, and where dismissal is almost impossible. The lives of many of those that live in the centre of Barcelona sometimes feel as far removed from that aspiration as could be possible.

All the images in this series were shot using a compact camera. Each reflects a snapshot of daily life in the centre of Barcelona that is far removed from the normal tourist crowds which are often literally only a few meters away.
