Escape #1
The recently resolved usher’s strike at the Liceu, Barcelona. It is not clear what they really won, but it quite surprising that the unions are still able to organise a two-month strike in this way given the increasingly right-wing politics of both Spain and the European “Union” at large (I use quotes deliberately, given the appalling situation with Greece). The second photograph was very poorly developed. Unfortunately, the next two rolls of film suffered serious underdevelopment due to using developer that had probably been stored too long (it does not help that […]
Las Ramblas, Barcelona. Ilford Delta 100, processed in Ilfosol 3 1+14 for 4:30 at 26c. The exposure was about 1/5 second, panning rapidly with a 50mm lens. I would bet that Tsipras and Varoufakis feel like this today…
Abstract street photograph, taken while panning the camera by hand using Ilford HP5+ film. Although it was getting dark at the time, it still needed an ND filter to get a sufficiently long exposure for this picture. The next set of films will be processed at home. I think I am going to have a lot of abstract images from here on…
Panning hand-held low-light street photograph, taken outside of the Liceu, Barcelona. I took several shots like this, trying to get a balance between motion blur on the background with a reasonably sharp subject. I think this needs more practise, although film tends to discourage experimentation…
… and easier still when there are (almost) no people. This is the last of the sequence. There were a few interesting photographs from the short walks that yielded the photographs, which I have added below.
It is always easier from behind…
One of the many mobile phone shops in the Raval area.
More light and shadow on Carrer dels Tallers, Barcelona.
But maybe Apple would be better off releasing some gafas de sol here instead…
Taken next to the Apple Store, in Plaça Catalunya. Everyone is looking very grim this week, perhaps because Apple decided not to release its new watch here in Spain…
Street scene, Barcelona. The light at this time of year is great for the narrow streets.
This has to be the hardest job – many of the flats the gas is being delivered too lack elevators and have tiny, cramped stairwells. It is astonishing that in 2015 there are still numerous people in Barcelona that rely on these deliveries for cooking and heating, rather than on piped gas.
The first of a sequence of street photographs while I wait for the last batch of films to finish processing. They are part of an ongoing project for street photography in Barcelona. Street photography is an odd genre, so wide, ill defined and extensively shot that it often feels like its own cliché. Keeping this in mind, this sequence will do its best to use high contrast black-and-white processing, and hackneyed techniques such as pointing at a poster and waiting for someone to walk past. To reinforce the modernity of the cliché, these are all shot […]
Some more holiday snaps street photography, from two markets in Belo Horizonte. The first set are from the Sunday Market, which mainly sells clothing, toys and arty things alongside the Parque Municipal and Palácio das Artes: The second is from the central market, which sells just about anything you can imagine (although I am not sure about the bird-cage hats): All images were shot with the Ricoh GR in TAv mode using auto ISO and fixed focus. The indoor market shots are a bit of a stretch – to get […]
Some street images from some short walks in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. I hope that these capture some of the diversity of the people here in a town which spans everything from the mining communities to upmarket tourism. These were all taken on a short visit to the town, while wandering around looking at the sights (and sites) rather than actively setting out on a proper project. It would need a much longer visit to do this really well. Also, a couple of almost-but-not-quite street images that I quite […]
